eight Eight is the number between seven and nine. Spiders have eight legs. Stop signs have eight sides. An eightsided figure is called an octagon.

x^{n} exponent An exponent is a power that a number is raised to. For example, in 2^{3}, the exponent is 3. 
exponential notation Exponential notation (also called scientific notation) is a shorthand way of expressing very small or very large numbers; this system avoids using a lot of zeros by using powers (exponents). In scientific notation, there is a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of ten. For example, the number 250 written in scientific notation is 2.5 x 10^{2}. For another example, the number 0.000052 written in scientific notation is 5.2 x 10^{5}. 
expression An algebraic expression consists of one or more variables, constants, and operations, like 3x4. Each part of an expression that is added or subtracted is called a term For example, the expression 4x^{2}2x+7 has three terms.
